An expression consisting of variables, constants and mathematical operators is called an algebraic expression. We will learn about the variables with matchstick patterns. We will see the use of variables in geometry and arithmetic. A mathematical statement that indicates that the value of the LHS is equal to the value of the RHS is called an equation. The chapter contains five exercises.

__Chapter 12 Ratio and Proportion__

A comparison between the quantities made by using division, i.e. by verifying how many times one quantity is into the other quantity. This method is known as comparison by ratio. To calculate ratio, the two quantities have to be measured using the same unit. If the ratios between Quantity A and Quantity B is equal to the ratio between Quantity C and Quantity D, then the four quantities A, B, C and D, are said to be in proportion. A figure can have line symmetry if a line can be drawn dividing it into two equal halves. The line is called the line of symmetry. We will learn about inked string patterns, figures with two lines or more than two lines of symmetry and about reflection.
