Chapter 9 What Happened to the Reptiles Class 6 English Summary

Prem, the narrator of the story had to run from his village as the people there fought in the name of religion. Many houses were burnt down in fire. Prem's house was one of them.  There he came now to the village, Pambupatti several hundred miles away from his own. He saw some people near a well. He ran to them, but before he could tell them anything, he fainted. An old man of the village looked after him. He told Prem an interesting story.

A long ago there lived reptiles like snakes, crocodiles, turtles, lizards in Pambupatti forest. Every month there would be the meeting of reptiles whose president would be Makara, the biggest crocodile of the forest. He disliked tortoises and snakes. So he ordered them to leave Pambupatti. The lizards were also ordered to leave the jungle. All kinds of awful things began to happen in the forest. In the absence of the tortoises, the forest smelled very bad as there were no tortoises to eat rotten fruit and rotten river animals. Now, it was the turn of the snakes to be driven off from the forest. Now in the absence of snakes, rats and frogs outnumbered every other animal in the forest and created a nuisance for the crocodiles.

The crocodiles soon became fed up of the situation of the forest. They had also realised that the Makara was not that strong or powerful as they thought. So they sent urgent messages for the tortoises, snakes and lizards to come back to the jungle.

In next two months the forest was back to normal. When Prem heard this story he wanted to tell the story to everyone in his village. The old man advised him to tell the story to more and more people. They too would understand that each of us is important and has a particular place in this worlds of ours.
