Chapter 9 Desert Animals Class 6 English Summary

Deserts are the driest places on earth. It does not rain there for months or even years. The sun is very hot and bright. So the desert animals have to find different ways of coping with these harsh conditions. Like Gerbils spend the hottest part of the day in their underground burrows. Not all deserts are endless seas of rolling sand dunes. Some deserts are rocky and some are sprinkled with colourful flowers during the spring.

There are a variety of snakes found in the desert. Some are poisonous while some are harmless. One of the most ill-reputed snake is rattlesnake. Its rattle can be heard from thirty-metres distance and it strikes with lightning speed. Rattlesnakes kill their prey with venom and swallow the prey whole.

Another animal which lives in the desert is Mongoose. Mongooses love to go in search of food together. They are famous for being able to kill snakes without getting hurt themselves. All female mongooses have their kitten at about the same time. They are raised in a den made inside an old termite or some hollow log.

Camel is another desert animal. They have long shaggy winter coats to keep them warm and short, tidier coats in summer to keep them cool. They can survive for up to ten months without water.  There are two different kinds of camel is in the desert. One is called 'the Dromedary'. It has only a single hump. The other one is called 'Bactrian camel' and has two humps. People usually think that camel's hump is a storage container and it stores water in it but it is not true. In reality, humps are full of fat which nourishes the camels when they have nothing to eat.
