CBSE Class 9 English Language and Literature Syllabus 2020-21| Check Latest Exam Pattern

CBSE has released revises Class 9 English Language and Literature Syllabus 2020-21 that will ease the academic pressure on students as the board has decided to reduce approx 30 percent syllabus due to ongoing health emergency created by the coronavirus pandemic.

There will be three sections in the question paper which will be of 80 marks while 20 marks will be given to Listening and Speaking Competencies.

Section A - Reading Skills 
Section B - Writing Skills with Grammar
Section C - Literature Textbooks and Supplementary Reading Text

Part A

Reading

1. Multiple Choice Questions based on a Discursive passage of 400-450 words: 10 marks
2. Multiple Choice Questions based on a Case-based factual passage of 200-250 word: 10 marks

Literature Textbooks

3. Multiple Choice Questions based on an extract from drama/prose. Any 1 out of 2 extracts to be done.: 5 Marks
4. Multiple Choice Questions based on an extract from poetry. Any 1 out of 2 extracts to be done.: 5 Marks

Grammar

5. Ten Multiple Choice Questions, out of twelve, to be answered. Questions shall be based on the following:
i. Tenses
ii. Modals
iii. Subject – verb concord
iv. Reported speech
a. Commands and requests
b. Statements
c. Questions
v. Determiners

Part - B

Writing

1. Writing a Descriptive Paragraph (word limit 100-120 words) on a person or a diary entry based on visual or verbal cue/s. One out of two questions is to be answered. 5 marks
2. Writing a story (word limit 100-120 words) on the basis of given cue/s . One out of two questions is to be answered. 5 marks

Literature

3. Four out of six Short Answer Type Questions to be answered in 20-30 words each from
Beehive and Moments (two out of three from each textbook.).2x4=8 marks

4. Four out of six Short Answer Type Questions to be answered in 40-50 words each from
Beehive and Moments (two out of three from each textbook.). 3x4=12 marks

5. One out of two Long Answer Type Questions from Beehive to be answered in about 100-120 words. This can be a passage-based question taken from a situation/plot from the texts. 5 marks

6. One out of two Long Answer Type Questions from Moments on theme or plot or
character sketch to be answered in about 100-120 words. 5 marks.

Grammar

• Use of Passive Voice
• Clauses: Noun, Adverb Clauses of condition and time, Relative
• Prepositions

Writing

• Letter on a situation
• Descriptive Paragraph on a place/event

Internal Assessment

Assessment of Listening and Speaking Skills will be for 05 marks. It is recommended that listening and speaking skills should be regularly practiced. Art-integrated projects based on activities like Role Play, Skit, Dramatization etc. must be used.
