Soon, a merchant comes running towards them, looking anxious and distressed. The merchant told them that he has lost his camel and asked if they have seen it. The four young men surprise him by correctly describing his camel. They told the camel is lame in one leg, blind in the right eye, have a short tail and suffering from stomach pain.
| Merchant asking about the camel |
Although the descriptions are accurate, the young men clearly state that they have not seen the camel. The merchant is shocked and cannot believe their words. The merchant becomes angry and suspicious. He believed that they must have stolen it since they know everything about it. He decides to take them to the King’s court for justice. The four friends agreed to go, calm and confident in their innocence.
Scene 2: The King’s Court
The scene shifts to the royal court of Ujjain, a grand hall adorned with rich draperies, tall columns, and a golden canopy. The merchant approached the King with his complaint and accused the four young men for stealing his camel. The King orders the travellers to be brought before him. The Sentry brings the four travellers before the King. They bow respectfully, remaining calm despite the accusations.
The King asked the merchant to clearly state his complaints. He told the King that the young men know every detail of his camel but insist they have never seen it, which makes them suspicious in his eyes. The King asked the questions to the young men individually.
| Merchant complaint to The King |
Ram Datt explains that he noticed the camel was lame in one leg because only three hoof marks were deep and the fourth mark was faint. Shiv Datt said the camel was blind in the right eye as it ate leaves only from the left side of the road. Har Datt concludes the camel had a short tail by noticing blood drops caused by mosquito bites, which a long tail would have brushed away. Dev Datt noticed that camel has stomach pain from the feet marks. He explained that marks of camel forefeet were deep and clear and hind foot were faint which indicated that the camel was drawing up its hind legs, likely due to discomfort.
The King was impressed by their logical reasoning, insights and observations. He declares that the young men are wise and honest, not thieves. He declares them innocent and scolds the merchant for making false accusations. The merchant, feeling chastened and embarrassed, bows and leaves the court.
